NYAN Slams Planned Protest Over IPOB Demand

From: John Faith

Abuja, The Northern Youths Assembly has strongly condemned the planned protest by certain groups demanding the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing this action as unpatriotic, provocative, and a direct threat to national security and unity.

In a statement released by Rt. Hon. I.M. Lawal, Speaker of the Northern Youth Assembly of Nigeria, the organization emphasized that such actions could inflame ethnic tensions and disrupt public peace, especially considering the painful memories of lives and property lost due to criminal activities associated with the proscribed group.

The planned protest is seen as an attempt to reopen old wounds and undermine the nation's efforts towards healing and peace. It is unfortunate that some elements are plotting to support a movement that has inflicted untold suffering on innocent Nigerians, especially in the Southeast.

The Assembly urged all agitators to respect the rule of law and allow the courts to determine the fate of the IPOB leader, rather than resorting to street demonstrations that could incite violence or civil unrest.

The Northern Youth Assembly also called on the Abia State House of Assembly and other political actors to distance themselves from such a misnomer, warning that any perceived support for a proscribed organization undermines democratic institutions and the authority of the Nigerian state.

The statement added that any attempt to mobilize protests in favor of a proscribed organization will not be tolerated, and such actions will be resisted by peace-loving Nigerians, particularly from the North, who have been victims of this group’s violent campaigns.

The Northern Youth Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria, urging all youths across the country to prioritize national stability above regional or ethnic interests.

The Assembly concluded by advising those behind the planned protest to seek lawful means of dialogue through constituted authorities, rather than resorting to actions that could destabilize the nation.
