Breaking News: Supreme Court Upholds Court of Appeal Ruling, Affirms Gabam as SDP National Chairman

Image
From: Abdullahi Idris  Abuja, The Supreme Court of Nigeria has delivered a unanimous judgment today, 22 May 2026, reaffirming Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam as the legally recognized National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP. In its decision, the apex court faulted the Federal High Court judgment in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2497/2025, which the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, relied on to recognize one Sadiq Umar Gombe as chairman of the party. The Supreme Court held that the Federal High Court ought not to have entertained the matter in the first instance, as it constituted a purely internal affair of a political party. The court declared that the Federal High Court judgment, which INEC acted upon, was fundamentally flawed and should be set aside. It further noted that the same judgment had earlier been nullified by the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/CS/127/2026 delivered on 27 March 2026, on the grounds that the lower court lacked jurisdiction o...

The Katagum-Bauchi narrative is a distraction, not a deciding factor

Image
By: Comr Mustapha Abdullahi The push around the Katagum-Bauchi dichotomy is a deliberate distraction designed to mislead the general public and to exert undue pressure on the National leadership of the APC. Framing candidate selection around zoning or sectional sentiment ignores the fundamental reality of Bauchi politics: elections are decided by voter numbers, mobilization, and statewide appeal. Since 1999, Bauchi South has produced governors not because of any contrived division, but because its larger population translates into higher voter turnout and decisive influence at the polls. Attempts to override this electoral arithmetic with narrative-driven arguments will only weaken the party’s chances in the general election. The historical data from INEC is unambiguous. In every governorship cycle since the return to democracy, the candidate who commands the strongest base in Bauchi South has held the advantage, because the zone delivers the largest bloc of votes. Politic...
