Former AG Malami Calls for EFCC Chairman’s Recusal, Calls Probe a “Politically Motivated Witch‑Hunt

From: Ahmed Isah

Abuja – The Office of former Attorney‑General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, issued a press release on Tuesday accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of conducting a politically motivated investigation into his activities. Malami described the probe as a “witch‑hunt” triggered by his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He traced the alleged bias to his tenure as AG, when the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry was set up to examine corruption within the EFCC. The current EFCC chairman served as the commission’s secretary, and the Salami Report’s Chapter 9 contains findings that could implicate him. Malami said the present investigation—marked by alleged illegal detentions, media harassment and procedural irregularities—appears retaliatory.

Malami asserted that he has been “clearly pre‑judged” and cannot receive a fair investigation while the chairman remains in office. He formally demanded the chairman’s immediate recusal and that the case be transferred to another agency. He also called on the Attorney‑General of the Federation to intervene.

In addition, Malami demanded that a charge be filed and that he be arraigned within 24 hours, citing Sections 35(3)–(5) of the 1999 Constitution. He warned that the EFCC’s reliance on foreign‑convicted witnesses constitutes an abuse of process.

The statement concluded that Malami seeks no political settlement; his sole aim is to clear his name before a competent court. The release was signed by Mohammed Bello Doka, Special Assistant on Media to Malami.
