Asofsi Opens Learning Center In Agaie For Fulani Children

NIGER STATE - The Association of Fulbe Scholars and Intellectuals, ASOFSI, has launched a new school in Rugan Alhaji Auta Maku, a Fulani settlement in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State. The initiative was led by the National President of ASOFSI, Sheikh Fatihi Dahiru Usman Bauchi PhD, on 11th July, 2026, with members of the National Executive Council including the National Secretary, Sani Danaudi Mohammed, and the National Director of Education, Abdullahi Adamu Jugudo PhD, in attendance. The project is aimed at providing immediate access to both Islamic and Western education for children in the community.

Rugan Alhaji Auta Maku has existed for decades, yet it remains without a hospital, a school, social amenities, or even a motorable road. A journey that should take 30 minutes lasted nearly 1 hour 30 minutes due to the poor state of access routes. Addressing the gathering, the National President said the condition of the hub reflects a painful truth about how many settled and semi-settled Fulani communities have been forgotten in government planning and budgetary provisions, despite their contributions as farmers, herders, and voters.

Speaking during the launch, Sheikh Bauchi said ASOFSI was founded to bridge this gap and to ensure that no Nigerian child is denied the right to learn because of where they were born. He described education as the only sustainable weapon to break the cycle of poverty, ignorance, and negative stereotypes. “We are not waiting for tomorrow. We are not waiting after elections. We are starting now, because the children cannot wait,” he stated. The school will offer literacy classes, civic education, and health advocacy alongside formal learning.

The National Secretary, Sani Danaudi Mohammed, said the intervention was deeply personal. He recalled starting his own education in 1992 in a nomadic school under similar conditions of dust, hardship, and limited resources. “If Allah raised me from that small beginning to this point, I am confident He will do the same for these children standing before us today,” he said. He added that crime has no tribe and that reducing an entire people to negative headlines is both wicked and lazy. The people of Rugan Alhaji Auta Maku, he noted, are Nigerians who deserve dignity, opportunity, and development.

The community received the ASOFSI delegation with warmth and presented Fura da Nono as a sign of respect and gratitude. Despite their hardship, the residents expressed a strong commitment to learning and to supporting the new school. Community leaders pledged to work with ASOFSI to ensure the success and sustainability of the project. The National Director of Education, Abdullahi Adamu Jugudo PhD, said ASOFSI will also focus on teacher training and learning materials to guarantee quality education for the pupils.

Concluding the event, the National President reaffirmed ASOFSI’s commitment to transforming underserved Fulani settlements across Nigeria through education. He said the launch in Agaie is only the beginning of a broader plan to invest in literacy, health awareness, and cultural preservation. “This is a journey of hope and promise,” he said. “Insha'Allah, we will keep showing up until every child in this hub can read, write, and dream again.” ASOFSI called on government, development partners, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative.
