Federal High Court Affirms Shehu Musa Gabam As Authentic Sdp National Chairman

Abuja — The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has affirmed *Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam* as the authentic and legally recognized National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in a judgment that lays to rest months of internal contestation over the party’s leadership. According to the Certified True Copy, CTC, of the judgment obtained and made available to newsmen, the court held that the processes leading to Gabam’s emergence and the constitution of the current National Working Committee, NWC, were in full compliance with the SDP Constitution, the Electoral Act, and relevant party guidelines.

In its reasoning contained in the CTC, the court emphasized the supremacy of party supremacy documents and due process in internal party democracy. The judge ruled that the Gabam-led NWC remains the only body with the legal authority to speak for, act on behalf of, and bind the SDP in all political and administrative matters. The judgment further declared null and void any parallel claims to the chairmanship, stating that such claims lacked constitutional foundation and were inconsistent with the records presented before the court.

The court also made consequential orders directing all organs of the party, members, and stakeholders to recognize and work with the Gabam-led leadership. It restrained any individual or group from parading themselves as officers of the party outside the structure recognized by the judgment. According to the CTC, the court noted that stability within political parties is critical to the health of Nigeria’s democracy, and that allowing factionalization to fester would undermine both the SDP and public confidence in the electoral process.

Reacting to the development, members of the Gabam-led NWC described the judgment as a victory for constitutional order and the rule of law. In a statement following the release of the CTC, party officials said the ruling has provided the legal and moral clarity needed for the SDP to move forward. They noted that the focus will now shift to strengthening party structures across the 36 states and the FCT, expanding membership drives, and positioning the SDP as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say the judgment comes at a critical time for the SDP as parties begin early preparations for 2027. Analysts believe that with the leadership dispute settled, the SDP can now consolidate its presence, attract new entrants, and present a united front. The affirmation of Gabam, a veteran party administrator, is also seen as a signal of continuity and experience within the party’s top hierarchy at a time when Nigerians are demanding more issue-based politics.

The Certified True Copy of the judgment has since been circulated to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and other relevant authorities. Party leaders say they will use the ruling as a foundation to reconcile aggrieved members, rebuild trust, and ensure that the SDP speaks with one voice. For now, the Federal High Court’s decision has returned the party to a path of legal clarity, with Gabam firmly at the helm as National Chairman.
