Arewa Youths Endorse Wike’s Rainbow Coalition

John Faith
Gombe-The Arewa Youths Advocate for Peace and Unity Initiative has expressed its support for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his reported plan to launch the Rainbow Coalition as another platform to mobilise support for the re-election of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the 2027 general elections. The group described the initiative as an opportunity to broaden the support base for the President and bring together Nigerians across political, regional, ethnic and other divides in pursuit of peace, unity and national development.

In a statement signed by its National President, Sani Mohammed, in Gombe, the group described Wike as a significant national political figure whose contributions to Nigeria’s political development and democratic process deserve recognition. According to the group, the role played by Wike in the political developments surrounding the 2023 elections and his subsequent public support for President Tinubu should not be dismissed. It therefore urged APC Governors under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma, to recognise and appreciate the contributions of individuals who have supported the President and the broader political objectives of the APC.

The group further stated that, as members of the political community who are actively canvassing support for the re-election of President Tinubu, it would identify with the Rainbow Coalition and participate in efforts aimed at mobilising Nigerians for the President’s 2027 bid. The organisation said its decision is based on what it described as Wike’s consistent and open expression of support for President Tinubu, adding that it considers such public positioning preferable to political ambiguity or support that is only expressed for political convenience.

Reacting to comments attributed to APC chieftain Hon. Farouk Adamu Aliyu concerning Wike, the group expressed its disagreement with the remarks and said political contributions should be assessed within the context of individual records, influence and demonstrated commitment to national political engagement. The group noted that while Farouk Adamu Aliyu has spent decades in the APC and its political ecosystem, it believes Wike’s recent national political interventions and his role in contemporary Nigerian politics should also receive due recognition. The group called for respectful political discourse and constructive engagement among leaders and stakeholders.

The Arewa youths said it intends to commence wider mobilisation in support of the Rainbow Coalition and make appropriate public declarations of its position. It also announced plans to organise town-hall meetings and engagement programmes across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, with the objective of discussing national unity, peaceful political participation, development and the 2027 political process. According to the group, the proposed engagements will provide an avenue for young Nigerians and other stakeholders to exchange views and contribute to the political conversation.

The organisation further stated that it looks forward to working with Wike and other stakeholders within the Rainbow Coalition as the initiative develops, while maintaining its broader commitment to peace, unity and issue-based political participation. The group reaffirmed that its support for President Tinubu’s re-election effort will be pursued through lawful democratic engagement, grassroots mobilisation and public advocacy. It said the proposed town-hall meetings would be used to articulate its position and engage citizens across the North and the FCT on the issues it considers important to Nigeria’s political future.I can also make it more forceful and political, while keeping the language respectful and issue-based.
